Root Canals
Treatment for an infected tooth root.
Root canals are necessary when a cavity that has been left untreated becomes larger. Once the cavity reaches the pulp of the tooth, an infection forms at the base of the root canal, causing an abscess. This abscess is generally painful and will need to be removed.
Serious tooth decay can result in the need for root canal treatment. A root canal may be needed if the decay has reached the tooth's nerve. Essentially, a root canal involves cleaning out a tooth's infected root, then filling and sealing the canal.
Signs that you may need a root canal
Tooth pain or jaw pain especially a throbbing pain that may change with head angle or body motion. The pain may modulate with various bite pressures and or food temperature. The pain could be continuous or spike and fade.
Gum tenderness or swelling in the area near the tooth is a key symptom and usually means that root canal treatment is needed. Swelling can range from minor tenderness to acute pain extending to the face or neck. Symptoms can vary day-to-day or become continual and persistent.
